AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Google Gemini can do a lot of things, but one thing they’re not known for is their sense of humor — and new research proves they can be a ripper at a comedy game. .
A recent study by Google DeepMind (as seen by MIT Technology Review) tracked the actions of 20 comedians who used AI to create original jokes. They can use their favorite assistant to create a joke, write a joke together under pressure, or rewrite some of the old stuff.
The goal of the 45-minute comedy writing task was for comedians to come up with something “that they would feel comfortable presenting as a joke”. Unfortunately, many of them found that the likes of ChatGPT and Google Gemini (also known as Google Bard) are too much of a game.
On a larger scale, the study found that “many of the participants felt that LLMs did not succeed as a tool for production”, with AI assistants making silly jokes that were like “driving submarines from the 1950s, but with less discrimination.”. Many comedians, who were not identified, commented on “all the bad things that were done” and “the amount of human effort required to achieve satisfactory results”, according to the survey.
One of the participants said that the first thing that happened was “vomiting that I know I have to repeat and correct.” One comedian said, “Most of the jokes I used to write [are] the level of, I will go on stage and try it, but they are not at the level of, I would be worried if someone took one of these jokes”.
Of course, humor is a personal thing, so what jokes have AI chatbots come up with? One example, the answer to the question “Can you write me ten jokes about pickpocketing” was: “I decided to change jobs and pickpocket after watching a magic show.” “.
One comedian used the phrase “Please write a joke about a failed projector in an AI comedy.” The answer from one type of AI? “Our project must have misunderstood the concept of ‘AI.’ Thought it meant ‘Invisible’ because, it’s doing a great job of disappearing tonight!”.
As you can see, AI-generated jokes are still in beta…
Learn about AI
Our experience with AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot has been very consistent with the results of this study. While the best AI tools of 2024 are very useful for brainstorming ideas, summarizing words, and creating images, humor is much more difficult.
For example, TechRadar’s Core Tech Managing Editor Matt Hanson is currently putting Copilot in his lap and asking an AI chatbot to create his best liner. His response to “Write me an AI joke as a stand-in” made people wonder “Why did the computer go to the doctor? Because it had a virus!”
Copilot added that the joke “may not be ready to go around the game club” but “it has potential!”, showing that the chatbot knows it doesn’t have a funny bone. Another aspiring comedy writer, comedian Stewart Lee produced a suitably long line, but one that lacked Lee’s trademark anti-comedy and sarcasm.
The research also shows that AI tools can’t create artificial intelligence on demand – and that asking them to do so misses the point. Google DeepMind’s report stated that “the inability of AI to adapt to the experience is a major limitation”, most of the comedians in the study describe “the centrality of personal experiences in good sports”.
As one student added, “I have an idea of what will work and what won’t work based on my experience and learning comedy, but it’s very individualized and I don’t know that AI will be able to approach that”. .
